Core 3.5 generic pre-flight verification error

Hey guys,

Been trying to figure this problem out for a couple days, but to no avail. A few days ago I wanted to add a new host to monitoring, however, prior to adding the config file I decided to run the pre-flight check to ensure everything was good to go. Instead NAGIOS throws a processing config files error without any further details as to the root cause of the problem.

It feels like I'm overlooking something very simple which is all the more frustrating. Hope you guys can shed some light on this mystery.

Did you have a peak at nagios.debug with those settings turned on? Nagios normally(not always for files, always for folders) goes in alphabetical order. So are there any other host or service files in your objects/windows directory post SPRD-CHI-NOC01.cfg? Another thought would be to list all of your files in that windows folder and compare against the list that nagios read. It is one of two files, the last one listed(SPRD-CHI-NOC01.cfg) or the next one that nagios was reading and is not listed.

To answer the first question - no. There is no nagios.debug file in /usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.debug even though that's where the configuration points.

There are other host files in the objects/windows directory that follow SPRD-CHI-NOC01.cfg, yes. But this was not the last file in the verification process when the error first appeared. Originally there were a few other config files that NAGIOS read just fine previously, but I had moved them to a different directory before running the verification this time and they were not in the output. This almost makes it seem that NAGIOS can't read whatever file is next in line. How would I go about identifying what this file is? From the output I originally posted it does not appear the files are checked in alphabetic order.

I would first reduce the number of files for verification; maybe check the windows file and linux files separately.
Also, the lack of a verbose error leads me to believe that the issue could be with and escalation or dependency as those object lack proper error messages.

Could you please give an example of a NAGIOS setup where the issue would be escalation/dependency? This NAGIOS configuration was inherited by us from the previous sys admins, but I have not had any issues running config verification and troubleshooting the errors up until now.

Generally this is going to be a host or service escalation with something defined that is not valid. Let's make this easier and get strace to tell us what file nagios last opened. You may need to install the package strace first.

Ok, let's see.

When I run strace the last file opened is SPRD-CHI-NOC.cfg which is also the last file in the pre-flight error log. If I move this file to the inactive host directory and run strace again, the last file open is now ACHI-GPU03.cfg which did not throw errors previously. Each time I remove the last file opened the error still occurs just at an earlier point. Is there a command I could run to show the next file in read queue?

Let's go ahead and have you send us a full strace output. If you are concerned about the hostnames and such, feel free to pm me. At this point, it seems that it may be an issue post config read-in, but it's hard to tell. Even strace may not tell us if it is an internal function issue as that would not cause a kernel system call. But let's have a look and verify first.

Got it! Well now, I see an error relating to ndomod not starting properly due to the ndomod.tmp file not being accessable, which is absolutely mandatory. Let's take a look at that folder and file permissions.

Edit: Looking a little higher up shows that ndo.sock is also not showing properly. That should actually be created by ndo2db, so let's take a look there too.
