thanks that is what i was looking for. i could send our normal alerts which would be our first line to a distribution group and then only send the escalations directly to us via email/ sms.

i see that manual method but that also affects getting prod alerts to sms over the weekend. So far i have seen is i can go into the host and tweak the notification period to workdays only for the test servers. I am looking for a good way to separate prod and test notifications for servers. Our org doesn't normally send sms to the phone for test servers. After doing some more digging i did realize that it does pick up all running processes. Part of my problem i am trying to solve is to monitor other processes under the java executable but of course nagios just see's java . Example is websphere application server.
