Is there any performance tuning or sizing recommendations for the interface being slow when keeping a large number of indicies open? We originally had 30 days open, but working with someone else they suggested only keeping 7 and that helped the the speed of the interface, but we'd optimally like to ...

No, there is, but I don't see any blocks but they are in zones where there shouldn't be any issues.

We've had a single isntance runing for while and I'm trying to add a second node but getting timeout errors trying to add the node. I can ping the each node from the other node and I can't see any firewall issues anywhere.
