some hosts are more critical than others
I believe I know the answer to this, and it's "no" ;-) We have a subset of hosts that are more critical than others, and I'm looking for a way to make them stand out more if they go down. I could put a suffix on the hostname to make them more obvious. But is there any way to change the not...

Monitoring vSphere ESX server with Nagios Core
I want to monitor our vSphere 5.5 servers, but am still using Nagios Core (XI license, but haven't migrated), so no easy Wizard install for me. Do I understand correctly from other posts (like http://support.nagios.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=6536) that the general procedure would be: - extrac...

Thanks, Scott. That's what we always thought and relied on.

Re: clarification on host downtime
I just tested this on Core 3.4.1 and with the Host in downtime, a failing service check went into a hard/critical state, but no notifications went out. This is the behavior we always expected. So I'm still confused about this. Unfortunately, understanding this point is very important to us. If we're...

clarification on host downtime
A couple of clarifications on Host Downtime, if I might. I've read the docs and gone through previous posts, especially: http://support.nagios.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=8534&p=40278&hilit=setting+host+in+downtime+doesnt+set+the+services+in+downtime#p40278 With Core (3.0.3 here, sorr...

check_snmp working, but not sure if output checking correct
Using the check_snmp plugin, v1991 (nagios-plugins 1.4.12), I'm checking a Liebert UPS for any error condition. I believe I have the correct OID, and my call and results look like this: check_snmp -H <Liebert's IP> -C Public -o 1.3.6.1.2.1.33.1.6.1.0 SNMP OK - 0 | iso.3.6.1.2.1.33.1.6.1.0=0 # and wi...

Re: Changing the XI Virtual Machine Network Configuration
I downloaded "vSphere OVF Template 64-bit 2012R1.8" from the Nagios XI Downloads page. I deployed the VM under ESX 5.1, and *finally* getting the networking to work (no DHCP here, only static IP's). But none of the Nagios products were installed. Looking under /usr/local I found the "...

Re: Changing the XI Virtual Machine Network Configuration
That guide was pretty good, but no matter how I tried, the VM would not withstand a reboot, just kept hanging up on the boot. Finally after several reinstalls of the OVA, I manually reconfigured & restarted the network, did not reboot, and used that opportunity to install system-config-network-t...

Changing the XI Virtual Machine Network Configuration
In regards to the article "Changing the XI Virtual Machine Network Configuration", if the VM never gets any initial network info from DHCP, you can't really "yum install" anything, or is there a trick? I mean until the VM gets an IP and default route, it can't really get anyplace...

email loopback test -- out to Internet, and loop back in
We'd like to monitor our email system, with a top-to-bottom functionality test. I'm thinking that one of our linux servers might have a cron job that sends out an email to an Amazon EC2 Virtual Machine. That VM just forwards all incoming mail back to us, and it's delivered to the same internal linux...
