I believe openssl-devel is the RH equivalent of libssl-dev.

And a minor correction: this box is running RHEL 5.9. THe main Nagios server is on RHEL 6.4.

Here are the open ssl packages installed:

[root@xyz123 nagios-plugins-1.4.16]# rpm -qa |grep ssl
openssl-devel-0.9.8e-26.el5_9.1

You should be able to utilize the event handler service to trigger scripts if certain states are detected.

What kind of server? Windows or Linux/Unix?

Then you should look into one of the 3rd party programs that do just this-NagiosQL and a few others are out there.
