Are those settings for the service or for the host? It looks like those settings are being applied to the service PING, but the host seems to have max_check_attempts at something around 10.

What version of NRPE are you using and what does the check_service plugin look like?

I believe you'll run into issues if you try to use Mariadb on OEL 8.9. It will certainly try to install but I think it will fail. I believe mariadb is only supported on the EL 7's and only MySQL in the 8 and 9 versions. I think this is because the two started diverging and Nagios chose to stick with...
