Thats the problem. The previous admins didn't do anything consistantly so...that added the confusion.

historically added via 2.
CCM->Host Groups->...->Manage Hosts->...->Add Selected

I can remove the hostgroup from the host via method 1.

I have a hostgroup that for whatever reason does not show the listed hosts. The list populates for other hostsgroups.
