I am happy now with bulk mode, I was just trying to do sync mode because it was easier to set up and my environment is small enough that the performance between the two modes isn't really that noticeable anyway

Thanks. I was trying to run pnp4nagios in sync mode so running in bulk mode with MBowman's advice has gotten me through it and my issue essentially resolved via workaround

Nice catch, that got me going no problem . Still wondering why environment macros doesn't work though

So I have been waiting for the new version to come out that fixes the bug where enable_environment_macros does not work so I can run pnp4nagios, but and I am still not getting macros across even though I have process_perfdata set in nagios.cfg and my service/hosts as well as enable_environment_macro...
