it works.
was so focused on a firewall rules i missed this. didn't think it was disabled as the service state was showing as running.

I have removed this from the inventory and this has resolved the problem.
not sure why it would cause the getguests.pl to fail but it did.
a little bit of house cleaning is required for our virtual environment

After further investigation i have found out that the ESX host 5 has the same error message when using the root username.
this may be why the vcenter fails
