FLAPPINGSTOP emails

Post by lpereira »

hello:
I received an email from a third party support, saying that he suddenly started to receive this kind of emails from different services on a specific server.

Code: Select all

***** Nagios XI Alert *****

Nagios has detected this service has stabilized. Notifications will now be sent out as needed on a normal basis.

Notification Type: FLAPPINGSTOP

Service: Uptime
Host: UNCOOXXXX
Address: 172.30.XXX.XXX
State: OK
Info:
System Uptime - 14 day(s) 1 hour(s) 15 minute(s)
Date/Time: 23/11/2017 15:51:17
the funny thing is, i (with a Nagios Admin account) never received those kind of emails, only "true" alerts (service warning, recovery, down, etc). Never The flapping ones.

Also, there's no indication of service been down... and this started to happen since yesterday...

Is there a way to disabled them by default?

Thanks in advance!!

Hi,
You can work on two level (I suppose the knowledge of template infrastructure)
  • stop nagios engine to catch flapping
  • stop contact receive email
work on engine
Configure --> Services/Service Templates --> select the service --> alert settings
unckeck flapping from notification options

work on contact
Configure --> contacts --> select the user --> aller settings
unckeck flapping from notification options

HTH,

Thanks @Francesco!

Ipereira, did the unchecking of flapping notifications resolve your issue? You can uncheck this if you are receiving a lot of these notifications.

Also, this email indicates that the flapping of a host/service has stopped.

Code: Select all

When a service or host stops flapping, Nagios will:

Log a message indicating that the service or host has stopped flapping.
Delete the comment that was originally added to the service or host when it started flapping.
Send a "flapping stop" notification for the host or service to appropriate contacts.
Remove the block on notifications for the service or host (notifications will still be bound to the normal notification logic).

yes, disabling the flapping option stopped the emails. What i do not understand is, why ( as a Nagios Admin) i did not recevied them, but other users did.

It is hard to say after the fact, but usually the main reason for not receiving certain types of notifications is not having the corresponding check-boxes selected under the "Notification Preferences" page for the particular user ("Host Flapping" and "Service Flapping" in this case).
