switch monitoring question

I monitor 3 Cisco switches with XI and SMTP. I don’t suppose there’s any way for Nagios to distinguish whether there’s a problem with a port or the port just doesn’t have anything plugged into it?

Unfortunately there really isn't a way to distinguish whether the port is having issues versus it not having anything plugged in.
