Introduction and Announcing Filesystem and Run Standards

Hello all,

In case any of you don't know, I'm the new core developer here at Nagios. I started in July.

That's the intro part now for the announcement part.

One of the things I'm working on right now is bringing core, ndoutils, plugins, nrpe and nsca up to date

Part of that larger project is updating the install. That involves using the FHS (http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html) and adding support for systems running systemd. When done, I want all the projects set up to compile and/or install on any Linux distribution, *BSD systems, Mac OS X, Solaris, HPUX, AIX, and any others you folks can come up with. It's an aggressive goal, to be sure, and it may not ever be completely reached. But I think it's worth doing.

I've set up a project on GitHub at https://github.com/jfrickson/nagios-standards. This may (or may not) be moved to https://github.com/NagiosEnterprises at some point in the future. Right now, there isn't much there, but I will be adding quite a bit over the next few days. After that, I'm calling on the community to help out. Especially to help on systems I don't have access to, correct my mistakes, offer suggestions and advice, and participate in a lively discussion.

This is taking longer than I thought it would! But I've started doing some tests.

If any of you have experience with non-Linux OS's, such as AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, OS X, etc., I'd like you to post here, or PM me, so I can get a test configure script for you to run and comment on. It doesn't install anything, just gathers some information and decides what directories would be used if an actual install was done.
