nagios not auto starting in Gentoo

Post by majed »

Peace, I had nagios 4.1.0rc2 and it did not start with the Gentoo even though it is added to run level startup. I upgraded to version 4.3 in hopes of solving the problem but in vain. Now I upgraded to 4.3.1 and to no use. Is this a nagios problem or a Gentoo problem?

Did you use any particular guide when setting this up on your Gentoo machine? This one looks pretty reasonable:

Since we don't control what Gentoo distributes as a "nagios" package, troubleshooting is a bit tricky.

well emerging nagios will install nagios 4.2.4 and i like to have no security issues so i stay up to date. so i did not use emerge, by the way i tried to download nagios core from your site but the file was corrupted and so i went to sourceforge instead.

I kinda think that the famous nagios would test its software on all distoroes when releasing the latest version.

We test primarily against Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS, and RHEL. I think testing against every possible Linux flavor would be a bit prohibitive for any OSS.

Are you able to start the Nagios daemon at all? Is it just the init script that is failing?

Being an open-source project, we welcome contributions from the community. As Matt alluded to, there are many, many Linux distributions. 847 of them in fact, according to DistroWatch. It's not feasible for us to test every single one of them, but we do test the ones we see most often in production. If you're interested in helping us test the other 843 distributions, please let me know - it would be much appreciated!

The current version has init scripts working, I can offer to test on Gentoo. Let me know what to further troubleshoot.

I don't know that there's one specific thing that needs to be tested. The maintenance branch is available at https://github.com/NagiosEnterprises/na ... tree/maint

If you find bugs in the maint branch, the best thing would be to post them at https://github.com/NagiosEnterprises/nagioscore/issues

I wonder though if your time might be better spent becoming the Gentoo nagios package maintainer. I know nothing about how Gentoo coordinates what is in emerge, but it seems a more specific task that just installing the maint branch and throwing stuff at it. Clearly emerge lags behind what you'd like. It's an open-source project, so scratch your own itch, as they say.

The plugins and many of the other resources are also on github. I'm happy to provide links if you'd be interested in getting involved in those projects as well. Either way, thanks for the contribution to the forums!

This is way over my head. Recently i synced gentoo and tried to emerge net-analyzer/nagios and it said nagios 4.3.1 available, so i emerged it and it placed a new file in init.d, i guess that didn't happen when i installed it manually and now nagios starts with gentoo!

If you can figure out what exactly wasn't being installed, please do file a bug report at https://github.com/NagiosEnterprises/nagioscore/issues
