Nagios core Working proceedure

Hi everyone,

I am very much interested to know about nagios. i could get the overview of nagios core and ns client from the web.could any one please brief me how exactly it works. What is the exact functionality of nagios core and nsclient. What they actually do in order to monitor if a machine is alive.

I had already gone through those overviews. i need indepth knowledge regarding the same. the working progress.
