Monitoring without remote agents - solved/closed

Post by sebastiaopburnay »

Hey, I'm still discovering nagios and learning about it's capabilities.

I would like to know how much can you monitor a remote machine, it's state and services (specially windows servers) without installing on it any agent.
Not even SNMP agents.

I'm guessing I wont be able to do much more than test for open ports using telnet, but I which I'm wrong.

Thank you very much for the documentation and assistance provided.

with my best regards,

The main limiting factor on this is the firewall. It all depends on what kind of traffic can get in and what ports are open.

You're correct in that you can't get much detailed information on remote clients without an agent. The options that most people use are the agents, combined with nrpe or nsca, and some people use ssh, but it's much slower unless you use it with "check_multi".
