I think @mcapra covered, the rest, but I wanted to clarify that "upgrading" is not really possible. It's more of a migration: https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ios_XI.pdf

That may be good enough for your needs, but I just wanted to clarify before you start the process.

To answer the other part of your question, Upgrading from Core to XI is typically a straightforward process, but it can have some hidden gotchas. Not to be too commercial here, but that's one of the things that our company specializes in.
