NSClient++

Post by mr_bo_jungle »

Hi all, i have recently installed Nagios3 onto a Debian 5 server with the intention of monitoring various virtual machines running with a vsphere, vcentre, ESX 4 SAN environment. Unfortunately it wasn't succesfull because i cannot get any information from the virtual servers. When i view the service status for each server from within Nagios all of the services show as red and the status information shows as 'Name or service not known'. I can telnet from another 2003 server into the NSClient on any other virtual machine with no issue on port 12489, i'm sure this is caused by a misconfiguration somewhere within the Nagios /etc files but for all the reading and Googling i cannot find a working solution to this issue, amongst many others.

I need some guidance on the right configuration to get Nagios working correctly as thus far i seem to doing an injustice to what appears to be a very powerfull application.

Many thanks :)

Okay, i have managed to connect to the remote NSClient and retrieve uptime data using the basic check_nt command of sudo /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nt -H 172.91.91.11 -s 'passwordhere' -p 12489 -v UPTIME but from within Nagios itself where i look under the Service Detail everything shows in red with the warning message of 'Name or service not known' and the following:

Also, specifically where i click on the NSClient++ service i get a page stating as follows:

It appears as though you do not have permission to view information for this service...

If you believe this is an error, check the HTTP server authentication requirements for accessing this CGI
and check the authorization options in your CGI configuration file

UPDATE,

okay i fixed it, it turned out to be that i had specified an ip address instead of using a $HOSTADDRESS$ arguement inside one of the .cfg files, phew finally nagios3 is pulling data from the nsclient program on remote hosts. Onto new ideas now, i am now trying to retrieve RAID array data from HP array cards using NRPE, so far no luck but i will stick at it :)
