Nagios performance is poor.

Postby mkh » Wed Feb 06, 2019 11:18 am

Forgive me for the sketchy details on this, but that occurred late last year and while we have nagios working, it's performance isn't great. We are running Nagios Core 4.4.3 on Ubuntu 18.04. We did an O/S patch last year (from 16.04) and initially nagios wouldn't display correctly again without additional packages "sudo apt install php libapache2-mod-php". I got this tip from the comments section on https://forum.linuxconfig.org/t/install ... org/2107/5

I've been scratching around trying to find where the problem lies. When you first go on to to the nagios home page, there's a real drag for the daemon pid to be checked, and any movement off pages, scheduling another check, any navigation around the site is sluggish. We have not increased our estate and we are checking something like 300 services. Before this upgrade, all was OK.

one thing i did notice was in location /usr/local/nagios/var, this is a listing of the directory:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 nagios nagios 711907 May 27 2015 nagios.tmpdMWcnq

-rw-rw-r-- 1 nagios nagios 354987240 Feb 6 15:19 status.dat

Why are those tmp files suddenly bloating? i assume they are related to status.dat and retention.dat? Given the age of the files that are being created, the sudden jump in size may fit with the upgrade. Sorry I can't be more specific on events, but it's a while ago. it still works, just not very satisfactorily.

Any help would be great.

Please post the output of these commands (as root or with sudo):

Code: Select all
ps aux
ipcs -q
top -n3
df -h
df -i
tail -n20 /var/log/messages
dmesg
sestatus

Temp File

Format: temp_file=<file_name>
Example: temp_file=/usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.tmp

This is a temporary file that Nagios periodically creates to use when updating comment data, status data, etc. The file is deleted when it is no longer needed.

Thanks for the response. I did wonder about the role of the tmp files, but was surprised that there were so many in that location, and the age of them, especially if they are transient. I've put the output of the commands you asked for below. I ran the final one (sestatus), and initially it saisd that it was not installed. I've installed it, but the it is showing as disabled.

Thanks again for your help.

/var/log/messages has been replaced by syslog (so I found), and here are the lines you asked. I've obfuscated IP's and
mail addresses.

That is too long to post in a single message, so I'll ass a second post.

This looks like you have a bunch of network shares that cannot connect, I'm not sure if this is related, but it can really slow down a system if it cannot mount it's drives.

Thanks for that.

I'll report it to our sysadmins.

I'll update after that.

Thanks for your time.

Well, I think we have cured it, but by rather brutal means, but I'm going to keep an eye on it.

When I broached the topic of the remote drives failing to be mounted, the sys admins said that they admitted that it was them that caused the failing messages, but that the issue no longer applied - the system was no longer reporting the errors.

So, rather crudely, as I was suspicious of the size of retention.dat /usr/local/nagios/var we thought if that has become corrupt or in some way unmanageable as it had suddenbtly incfrteased in size in the autumn to 320M. We opted to close nagios and rename the file and restart it, in the hope that it created a new one - possibly losing history, but that's not a big issue for us. So we did that and it did create a new one, and it's now 538K - and seems unchanged since when we did it two days ago.

The plus side is that nagios is now responding as expected. It may not have been the most subtle of solutions, but it seems to have corrected.

I'm going to keep an eye on that file to see how the file grows.

Thanks for your time and help. Will read up on the use of that file, and try to understand what has happened.

there was a bug in some previous version of Core that could cause the retention.dat to baloon like that with duplicate comments.

Let us know if you have further trouble.
