Reducing the interval what impact does it has on the system

Post by wessamreda »

Hello,
we are sending nagios alarms as SNMP traps to SNMP server. we need to reduce the check_interval from 10 minutes to 1 minute. Could you please let me know if there is any impact on CPU or memory if we did so ?

Thanks!

If you reduce the check_interval from 10 minutes to 1 minute, on all of your checks, you will be performing 10 times as many checks, and as such would consume 10X as much CPU and memory as the checks currently consume.

The checks will be running 10x more frequently than they are currently and an impact will be expected. How much of an impact all depends on they type of check, number, how quickly the checks are returning results, etc... I'd recommend looking at the past CPU, memory, and load on the machine to get an idea of a baseline before making any changes to the interval setting.

Hello,
we don't have too much alarms to check. we have only 3 hosts and total 41 services.

The vCPU is 12 & vRAM is 64 details are below:

Also, could you please share the procedures to be followed to do so ?

Thanks!

The number of checks is low enough that I don't think you'll see much of an issue.

To increase the frequency of checks you'll want to set the check_interval option on the host/service configurations:

Note that you'll likely need to decrease the retry_interval(to 1) as well.
