Nagios services toggle between OK and UNKNOWN

Post by gdm59912 »

My nagios installation seems to toggle between showing all status monitored via NRPE as OK and UNKNOWN with the following error message:
CHECK_NRPE: Receive header underflow - only -1 bytes received (4 expected)
For example, all services go to UNKNOWN at ~5:30 and return to OK at 7:00, then again to UNKNOWN at 17:49 and back to OK at 22:00. The exact times of the day seem to vary and I have not been able to see a pattern.

I am running my small network without SSL/TLS and have therefore configured NRPE to use the -n switch. This seems to generally work fine, since throughout the day, services can be monitored ok for several hours.
So why is it going back and forth?

At this point, Nagios is pretty useless.

Any help would be appreciated.
