Indirect Checks possible with NCPA

I currently use NRPE to do an Indirect check from a Application Server to the Database to check the connectivity to the database. The result is sent back from the Application server to the Nagios Server.
Are there any other Plugins (NCPA etc) that can do the same type of Indirect check or is it just NRPE that supports this mechanism?
