Thanks for the information.
Let's address this next part. Because we'd like to be able to have Nagios XI pull notes from a file like it did in Nagios Core. This way instead of editing every single host if something changed slightly, we could edit the file and have the hosts get the information from there.
Please see my quoted question below.

Thanks

In Nagios XI, if I choose to view a host in Nagios Core
Home-->Host Detail-->
Select any host
Advanced Tab-->View In Nagios Core

On that screen, it will display notes (see the highlighted previous post - Contact SUG@EITS). In our old Nagios core free version, before going to Nagios XI, this was modified through and pulled from the hostnotes file.
EnvBroker1 wrote:In Nagios Core, I had to edit the hostnotes file from the command line in a format like

define host {
name SUGNotesHost
notes Contact SUG@EITS
register 0
}
It was also placed in the outgoing Nagios email alerts. I am trying to get that feature working again. So if anyone could tell me what happened to the hostnotes and servicenotes files, where they are located. Or if during the import, that information was parsed out to different configuration files.

Lastly, how do I get the information previously contained in those notes files to display in the alerts.

Thanks :D

This KB article should explain how to get it working:

Actually, what that document you referenced explains, I have working and that's not the issue.

I can go into a host or service and get it configured to display the information I manually put into the variable without any problems. But the information displayed by that variable is not the same information that is pulled from the previous Hostnotes and Servicenotes file, as indicated by the highlighted portion where it pulls the info "Contact SUG@EITS."

The document does not reference the files I used to use in Nagios Core. But the system is still pulling that information from somewhere because it can be displayed when I choose, "View this in Nagios Core." Either those files are there or renamed and relocated, or their information was parsed out to different configuration files. So I'm not sure where it's pulling the old information from or what variable it's using to load and display that information. So the specific things I'm looking for do not seem to be in the documents I keep getting referred to.

There's no connection to how that particular information is currently updated, versus the previous way to update it.

define host {
name SUGNotesHost
notes Contact SUG@EITS
register 0
}

I'm trying to find out where this old information is being kept and how it's referenced so I can update it and then use that variable in the message template so it can be display in the email alerts. So the question I'm not getting an answer to, or that I'm not understanding is how to I retrieve and edit the old information? It is obviously there because I can make it display, I just need to move it to the emails alerts if that's possible.

This may be something that either I'm not clearly getting my point across as to what isn't working and what I'm trying to do. Or it may be easier to just use one of our service calls on.

Thanks for the help but we are having a disconnect and it may just be my fault. Let's try it one more time and see what kind of answer you guys can come up with. Either way I do appreciate all the assistance.

I'm not familiar with how this used to work in your Core system.

I think we should take this into a support ticket so we can help you through a remote session as it may be something quick or something we are not understanding.

Please send an email to [email protected] referencing this forum thread and we'll take it from there. Reply to this thread when you have done this so we can confirm we received the email.
