Distributed monitoring best practices?

Post by daveinvb »

What is the recommended method for distributed monitoring using the current version of Nagios? I've seen the document (https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/gen ... utions.pdf) listing multiple ways but someone has also said that mod_gearmon is the current preferred method.

I would like to use a master Nagios XI server controlling multiple Nagios Core servers, each based on a geographical region. Is this possible, and if so, what is the best method to accomplish it?

Hi daveinvb,

I'm a XI customer that is running XI server (w gearmand) with 2 mod_gearman worker servers in the Boston area. We use XI 5.2.2 and mod_gearman 1.5.

Across the country (and other parts of the world) we use this XI instance in Boston to monitor network devices for our other sites, but have installed a separate XI instance for the other sites to monitor their servers/services. We then use Fusion to monitor the entire set of XI instances.

Happy to share details of our XI / Mod Gearman config.

- thanks brdr -

mod_gearman is certainly the recommended method and yes, Nagios Fusion will enable you to have a centralized UI for multiple installations of XI and/or Core.
