I can't find a place where I can enable email alert if service/host went down. Can someone let me know.

There are actually a few things that need to happen. They need to be enabled globally. They need to be enabled for the user. They need to be enabled at the service/host level.

I did a send test message and it went, but how do i test a message for down and up service/host alert email? thanks

You can't really test on a live host, unless you want to bring it down (or not monitor it briefly). If you want to test a certain config though, you can just make a dummy host.
Alert settings are discussed on page 5 of https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... gement.pdf, but I would suggest going over the entire document.
