Linux Agent Monitoring processes check_services

Hello folks,

I am curious as to the number that is returned as part of the "check_services" plugin executed by nrpe. I have several instances and for example it returns: "httpd : 9" It seems as though httpd is running 9 processes, if this is the case, can i set a warning/critical threshold for the number of processes that may be running buy that service?

This isn't built into this plugin, but it is a shell script that could be modified with some programming knowledge.
