Check host without using ping

I know this probably has been asked before but I can't find the answer.

We have moved some websites to Azure and they don't allow for host checks via ping. So how can I change our external nagios server to check via http instead?

I found this guide for NagiosXI which works beautifully for our internal nagiosxi server but not sure how to do the same for nagios core. https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... _In_XI.pdf
