XI hardware resources

Post by bbrown »

With the hardware resource minimum recommendations, how many 'hosts/services' was that tested against? We are currently testing/evaluating, and we're finding the system is choking pretty hard, with the VM pegging out CPU at 100% often. The initial VM was converted over to run on VM server with 2GB mem, and dual procs. We have 500 hosts, with 2100 service checks. It seems 'mysql' is a big culprit on CPU.
It is especially poor when you click 'Apply Configuration' and it runs through the verification check. This can take 1+ minutes to complete, or completely locks up, and we have to close out of the browser and start a new session.

Thanks for your time.

We are always looking at performance improvements. It's well documented that monitoring ESX while running on the same ESX is very poor, in both quality of service and performance. I contribute this to CPU cache contention and context switch penalties as a result of virtualization.

If you could identify areas that are both accessible to us and CPU/memory/network intensive that would help... Though we can't do anything about performance for mysql or ESX.

I'm a big supporter of smaller is better and more so that if you can shave a few operations off a task that runs all day some other application will waste the saved resources most greedily. The current situation where multiple developers feel that CPU and memory are cheap don't understand that this excuse is used far too much, causing an unsolvable problem for administrators.
