What If the IP address of Nagios server is changed

Post by pratikmehta003 »

Hi,

I would like to know what is the process to be followed if the IP address of the Nagios server is changed due any reason or requires a rebuild. Do we have any document for it.

Currently we are using Nagios Xi trial version for one customer as license is still not arrived. Due to some issues they want to change the IP address of Nagios server but my worry is that we have already added few devices and firewall rules are also binded to the IP in use.

Hello,

There are two scenarios for an IP change. One is you are moving from Server A to Server B. And the
other scenario is you are changing the IP address of an existing server.

For the first scenario of moving from Server A to Server B this document applies:
https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ios-XI.pdf

For the second scenario where the server is being "re-ip"ed, we can use a section of the above
document which I am showing here:

Changed IP Address

Code: Select all

If the IP Address of your Nagios XI server changed, the following needs to be checked / updated:
• Navigate to Admin > System Config > System Settings and ensure the Program URL and External
URL are correct
• Navigate to Admin > System Config > License Information and ensure the server is licensed
• Reconfigure and agents/clients like NRPE or NSClient++ to allow the new IP address to connect
Sorry to hear you are still waiting for your license. If you need help getting that expedited please
contact [email protected]

Thank you!

Hi Smith,

First scenario I understood...

But for second one if the IP is changed, how can I got to console and check those settings? It won't be accessible right.

HI,

Good question. In the second case, you'll still be able to access the GUI at the new address, but be sure to change the IP settings at Admin > System Config > System Settings so you do not have issues with reports or other functionality.

Hi Benjamin,

So you mean, first the new IP has to be assigned on the console and then allow the technical team to make changes on OS or network level?

Hi @pratikmehta003,

Typically, the IP address is changed first, and then the system settings are updated. This explained on page 13 of the following guide.

https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ios-XI.pdf

Also, keep in mind that it's necessary to re-configure the allowed IP address with the new IP address in the main config file for any agents you have deployed.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Benjamin
