Nagios XI hardware sizing

Post by Jiffy_Huang »

Hi,

I want to set up a Nagios XI monitoring system for 2500 hosts and 26000 services, with data collection estimated every 5 minutes. Would the Nagios system withstand this? I've referenced a table from "https://answerhub.nagios.com/support/s/ ... 4-e74b6d0e", but I'm unsure how to design it properly. Could you provide detailed hardware configuration recommendations?

I've seen in previous articles that having over 20,000 services can lead to performance degradation. Would this be a problem for the monitoring system I'm planning with the aforementioned specifications?

Thank very much.

Hi @Jiffy_Huang,

I believe 20,000 services is somewhat of a rough guideline, but we do know of Nagios XI users that have substantially more than that for normal operations. The ability of your system to handle a very high number of checks will ultimately come down to the types of checks you need to perform and the resources required for that. Some plugins are relatively high or low in terms of resource usage so it would be hard to know what level of system impact you would have without more information about what types of checks you want to run.

I've included some links with information about optimizing your XI performance which will hopefully be helpful in figuring out what your needs would be for a system of this size.
