Best Practices for Monitoring Microsoft Exchange 2016 in Nagios XI

Post by alfin »

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all doing well and that your monitoring setups are running smoothly.

I'm currently working on a monitoring implementation for Microsoft Exchange 2016 using Nagios XI, and I’d like to ask for some advice and insights regarding the following:

What’s the recommended approach or plugin for monitoring Exchange mailbox database storage (e.g., total size, available space, and general health)?

Is it possible to monitor mailbox storage per user? For example: individual mailbox sizes, quota usage, or historical growth trends?

Aside from storage, what other Exchange-related metrics or features are typically monitored through Nagios XI? Such as: mail flow, mail queue status, DAG replication health, service status, etc. Are there official or community-recommended wizards or plugins for this?

I’ve come across some Exchange-related plugins on the Nagios Exchange site and understand that PowerShell scripts combined with NRPE or NSClient++ are commonly used for accessing Exchange data.

That said, I’d really appreciate any best practices, recommendations, or example configurations that others have used successfully—particularly in Nagios XI environments.

Thanks in advance for your time and support.

If you want to monitor Mailbox Capacity Per User then you will need to consider: PowerShell cmdlets, Approach, Performance, Data Volume. It is also recommended for high value users only.
