Removing Default Templates

Post by Gavin »

We're running Nagios XI 2012R1.6, and would like to remove some of the default service/host templates which we're almost certainly never going to use.

For example, we don't have, nor are we likely to ever have, any Oracle servers to monitor. Is it safe to just remove the 'xiwizard_oracleserverspace_service'' template? If so, how easy would it be to restore these if we decided we wanted to use them in future? Would it just be a case of running the XI installer?

There's no technical driver for this, it would just make administration a lot easier for us as we'd know that everything in the config GUI is actually being used.

Thanks,

Gavin

You can save the hosttemplates.cfg and servicetemplates.cfg just in case something goes wrong and you would like to import them back to XI. Deleting default templates is NOT recommended. Do it at your own risk!
If you know for sure that you are not going to use a template, I guess you can delete it. You have to be very careful though. One template may reference another one, etc. You may have several levels in place. Unless you know what you are doing, you can easily break your nagios instance.
