Did you change the address of the web interface from within Admin > Manage System Config? Can you access nagios core @ ip.addr.of.server/nagios ? Did you make any system level changes or changes to the actual VM itself prior to rebooting that may be in conflict?
Sounds like it is stuck at grub. Do you see any other errors/messages?
Have you made any other changes to the vm?

Power the vm off and then start it up again. Give us a synopsis of what happens after it starts.

It should just auto boot the first grub option. Is it just sitting at the menu? If so, boot from the hd and choose the first grub kernel option. Strange. Did you update the kernel recently?
