Monitoring remote host via Nagios Core

I have finished the default configuration to monitor the local host using the Nagios instance, Now I would like to modify the configurations so that I can monitor a remote host. How do I accomplish this? I can see there files in the /etc/objects that I might need to change. Can someone provide a good explanation on how to successfully monitor a remote host?

Boy wouldn't answering that question as it currently stands be a book and a half. :D

Would you be able to narrow it down to something in particular that you are trying to monitor and which part of configuration you are unsure about? (Adding hosts, adding services, installing/configuring agents)

If we pick a single device... hopefully an explanation of that would help it all click in to place for you.
