Are you having a specific issue? Or can you be a bit more specific on what you need help with? Have you installed nagios already? Are you having issues with things you have already set up?

There is tons of documentation that explains how to use nagios, and the things you are looking to do are pretty easy.

This is our official documentation for Nagios Core: http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/nagi ... n/toc.html

It has everything you need to know about configuring checks and alerts, as well as how to modify them to suit your needs.

This is the quickstart guide which should get you up and running quickly: http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/quickstart.html

Everything in those guides should be regarded as "official". Make sure that the guides you looked at earlier aren't from third-party sites.
