Nagios output of 1 = Doesnt not like it?

Ok, i have been bashing my head against the wall. First, i noticed that PHP or Bash script, anything that outputs 1 it does not recognize it. It just goes to the next if statement. ONLY if i hard code 1 into a variable it takes it. IF its a exec command in php, or a VARIABLE="COMMAND" it does NOT like it. WHY!? this is killing me
