Quite some months after, is there an update on this? we are also being affected by it as our team cooperates in different countries.

2.8 RC, 2.9 didn't update well for me and had to revert...

Based on commit logs, I believe this has only recently been fixed, within the last 2 weeks, and likely would only be available in 2.9 and possibly only accessible internally to us with 2014 beta testing already. I wouldn't quote me on only internal people have access, it would make sense to allow this in 2.9.
Nagios-Plugins maintainer exclusively, unless you have other C language bugs with open-source nagios projects, then I am happy to help! Please pm or use other communication to alert me to issues as I no longer track the forum.
