After having a team meeting and consulting with our Lead Developer he has informed me that these are the most viable solutions:

http://www.vmware.com/products/vmotion/overview.html
http://www.drbd.org/

There are alternatives to this but each can pose its own specific set of problems depending on the setup which is going to be somewhat different in every case.

Thank you for looking into this for us. I t looks like drbd might be the most viable solution for true failover. The VM vmotion would still be a total manual effort.
