is there a time line we may expect this change?

It's hard to say. This depends on the priority of the other projects and on the length of the developers' TODO list. It will not make it to Nagios XI 2014 beta for certain. I hope this can be implemented in the next major release.

In February, the priority of this feature was bumped from '1' to '10' - meaning that it's on the devs radar. I'm not sure if it will make it into our next release (we're enhancing XI *a lot* in our next release), but it's safe to say that this feature request has not been forgotten.
