EDIT: Was resolved. Client had tried to remove all hosts and services which will cause a config error as nagios requires at minimum 1 host and 1 service to apply config. We restored a snapshot and preserved the localhost checks and all was working once again.

Remote assist fixed the issue and learned quite a bit more.

Thanks to abrist for his great assistance. I think Nagios should reward him with his very own Keurig machine.
