I was able to free up about 17% more drive space by cleaning up temp/backups so my disk space is down to 62% used. Thanks much for the tips on cleanup!
That being said I still need to figure out how to expand the disk without killing the server.

Did you power down the Nagios server before resizing the drive in VMWare?
If the server isn't shutdown, it could cause issues and may not boot after resizing.
