It looks like you have NRPE installed both under xinetd, and as a standalone agent. This is most likely causing conflicts based on which one is able to listen on :5666. I suggest removing the 'nagios-nrpe-server' package, and proceeding directly through XINETD, so that the results are not trivial.

After removing it, run the check from the Nagios machine and post the full input / output. Also, take a look at your /var/log/messages file on the client machine to see if anything appears regarding NRPE.

Ok so the good news is that one of the servers was solved by removing the other package. The other two don't have it installed -- so I am continuing to go through the steps again and will post.

So all of the servers have now been fixed! Each of them had a different problem... but at least now the SSL error is gone.

Glad to hear you were able to resolve the issue! Closing this
