okay i followed the steps and when i reboot i get

'kernal panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!'

before change

this is using the downloaded xi image, updated t0 2011R3.2

I would try repeating the steps one more time and see if the issue resolves itself. This procedure will be finicky about any kinds of typos that may have occurred during the resize.

done it about 3 times always ends up the same, and have to revert back to a snapshot

Hmm, I'm wondering if recent updates have caused a problem with those instructions. Here's the recent docs posted from VmWare's site:
