Ok, I removed the none option. Now I saw in the logs it started saying that email notification is disabled for the user. I tried masquerading as the user, but I have no options in the notification section (except for the checkbox to activate notification which is checked). I tried using the notification template to configure but I still get the same result.

Can you masquerading as that user again, Click on the user name in the top right of the XI GUI and then select the Notification Preferences menu and the Notification Methods menu and make sure everything is enabled on those menus, Update the settings and see if that fixes the notifications for that user.

Tried masquerading again, in notification preferences, notification are enabled, but the two other ones (types and messages) yields a page without checkboxes with only a green and a blue button.

Can you provide a screen capture of the Notification Preferences menu that you are seeing and post is here?
It should look like this one.

Ok, it seems the french translation of that page is broken, that is why I could not see anything. As I wanted to make it easy , I switched the user to english and the included screenshot shows everything checked for email

Some thing doesn't look right for the contact settings (I see duplicated settings) from your profile. Try running through this procedure to see if those settings are fixes.
Go in to the Core Config Manager > Contacts menu and edit the marcandre.alain contact.
Click on the alert settings tab and select skip for both the Host and Service Notifications Enabled fields.
Then click on the Manage Host Notification commands button and remove the command
Do the same for the Manage Service Notification Commands.
Then click on the Misc Settings tab and click on the Manage Free Variables button.
Remove all of the Variables, Save it and Apply the Config.
Test out the notification is received for that user.
If it fails, you may have to recreate the user account.

Recreating the user seems to have fixed this problem. HOwever I had to set him to english as event the dashboard did not load properly for him in french, even after recreating the user.

That is good news that it is working now.
We just came out with a new release today that should fix the French Language issue you are having.
Try upgrading to XI version 5.3.3 and see if that allows you to add users while the language is set to French.
Other than that, shall we close and lock the post as solved?
