I think it was unclear what was non-standard. /tmp is a directory, but is not tmpfs (unless set up that way, which we don't support). Here's some info on tmpfs if curious: https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentatio ... /tmpfs.txt

The reason he asked about a tmpfs is because your files are getting cleared. This is not the only reason things get cleared, but it is a reason. Debian, for example, automatically cleans /tmp. It's possible you have some sort of cleaning mechanism set up.

As for upgrading to 3.0.1, all software has bugs. We fix those bugs and release new versions. It takes some time to update the documentation accordingly.

The instruction from Nagios Clearly states to use 3.0 ( And I expect it to Work ! ) otherwise they may declare it as as "non-standard" installation as Mr "avandemore" Tried to do without even going trough the issue !

Unsupported would be running a beta release like the maint branch on GitHub.

Any newer officially released version will be supported. The guide will work with the 3.0.1 version, it has not been updated to reflect this.

There is a lot of work involved tested the latest version on 11 different operating systems and updating the documentation to reflect the latest available release (for CentOS/RHEL/Oracle Linux alone there is 15 different virtual machines used to test the building (5 variants per OS = v5 x86, x86_64, v6 x86, x86_64, v7 x86_64). I will add a disclaimer to the top that explains the version this guide is specifcially for and that newer releases should also work.

In all reality a bug was found and resolved in a newer version. Not everyone installs the NRPE on the Nagios Core server, a lot of people just install check_nrpe so it took a while before it was identified as a bug. We do a lot of testing and also rely on the feedback of end users, as not every scenario can always be tested.
