From the Nagios server, what's the output of /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nrpe -H <remote host ip> -n?

Please post your /etc/xinetd.d/nrpe for review. If you would prefer to PM the file, that is fine. Just make sure you update the thread after PMing the file.

CHECK_NRPE: Received 0 bytes from daemon. Check the remote server logs for error messages.

It looks like you sent a ntp config file, not /etc/xinetd.d/nrpe. If that's that's really in that file, then that's definitely an issue.

It should look something like the following

Also, you have an SSL issue. Depending on if you actually need ssl, you could just run it with the -n flag, but that's less secure. If you want to use SSL, it's probably a good idea to start a different thread for that and we can focus on getting it to run locally in this thread.

How do I pass the -n flag? I still get an ssl error.

Have you done a Quickstart? That may be the easiest method if not: https://www.nagios.com/services/quickstart/nagios-xi/ You could tackle both issues in the QS.

If the QS is not an option, could you run the NRPE check locally and then run tail -100 /var/log/messages and post the output?

Did you want to continue working through this on the forum or just wait for the quickstart? If you want to just wait on the quickstart, no need to respond.
