That worked!
I have one outstanding issue with the syslog monitoring though. I ran service --status-all but there's nothing labeled as syslog or anything that relates to logging. I tried changing the service from syslog to syslogd since that's what's listed in the Ubuntu documentation, but still no luck.

Do you have a rsyslog?
I think this is the "enhanced syslog" on some Ubuntu systems...
