does this issue has anything to do with event handler. I dont see any assign to the host or the host template

No, the Event Handler not defined should not effect the Escalations.
The testing on the XI 5.3.3 server is done and all of it worked for the Host Escalation emails.
Couple of things to note.
The way you have setup the Escalations is that it should send out the Escalated Host down Notification at the 3rd Notification period after the host was detected as being down.
The Escalated Recoveries work a little different. Your settings will only send an Escalated Recovery Notification if the host recoveries before the 4th Notification period.
If the Host is down longer than that, the Escalated Recovery Notification will not be sent. This is a normal function of Escalations.
Did you go through the objects.cache file to confirm that the settings are correct?

thanks for pointing that out. I will look into that
on the event handler, I was specifically talking about whether I should specify the one in the host template. I know you cant assign one on the escalation
I did check the objecs.cache file. everything looks OK. compared a host that isnt working with one that is and they both look identical.
In a different note. I notice there is a new version of Nagios Core. I upgraded Nagios Core from 4.4.1 to 4.4.2 and things are looking better. I am starting to see some host escalation flowing through. what's up with that???? any thoughts

No, you do not need to specify an event handler for the host or the host template, it is not needed at all.
Were you running Core 4.4.1 on your XI 5.3.3 server?
If so, that is the issue as there were some bugs that could cause notification issues and they were fixed in Core 4.4.2.

Yes, I was running Nagios Core 4.4.1 on Nagios XI 5.5.3. OMG, so this means escalation stopped working since upgraded Core back in June
I have overlapping escalation. two of them started to work, but not a third one. can you have overlapping host escalations?

The bug was intermittent and not failing all of the time.
