I would like to thank you for your help and tie this thread up. We never could get the import users option to work, like stated above we could only get the folders to show up, nothing inside them were the users are.
What I will end up doing is, using the authentication server I already configured, add users through the "Add New Users" button on the Manage Users screen. Make sure to select "Auth Type" LDAP.

- In this area XI does not give enough documentation to configure LDAP authentication i.e. import users and also how to log in. This caused a lot of frustration for me.
Another area I had issue with was setting up the authentication server. It seemed like XI was not even looking at the Base DN. In fooling around with it trying to get above to work, it seemed like all I needed was some string with dc= in it. It seemed like the DN you submit on the login screen, for the login name, was doing all the work.
BTW, this is the DN we have resorted to using for our login names in our configuration: uid=jsmith,ou=People,dc=xxx,dc=com
