Is your ESX machine using Active Directory to authenticate users? It's possible you may need to specify a domain.

No, the ESX hosts are using local accounts.

Try running this command and see if it is going to give you the same error:

./check_esx3.pl -H xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -u root -p <root's password> -l CPU
