First I must say you should not test this on a production box...

That said, you can try taking the <> out of the illegal_macro_output_chars in nagios.cfg

One thing you will for sure need to do is quote $SERVICEOUTPUT$ and $LONGSERVICEOUTPUT$ as well as the corresponding HOST commands.

Again be aware that this could have undesirable results

We have removed the "<" and ">" as suggested and all seems to work fine.
